ABOUT ONONDAGA

The initial resident of the town of Onondaga hailed from New York: Oliver Booth arrived in 1834 and, upon his passing, became the town's first death. On Christmas Day, his wife Harriet gave birth to a girl, making their daughter Hannah the first female born in town.

A post office was quickly established in 1844. Hiram Frye, the first doctor in Onondaga, served the community from the 1840s until 1877. The construction of the Onondaga Hotel took place in 1847-1848, providing accommodations for the post office and a grocery store. In 1867, Onondaga welcomed its first major general store, offering a wide range of dry goods and merchandise.

In 1870, the Michigan Central Railroad was built to traverse the town, bringing a surge of trades, settlers, and travelers to Onondaga, fostering the growth of flourishing businesses.

In Onondaga Township, a thriving community of businesses flourished, featuring a grain and flour mill, produce shop, four churches (First Congregational Church of Onondaga, Baptist, Methodist, and Wesleyan Methodist), two additional general stores, a blacksmith, justice of the peace, carpentry services, masonry, "The Knowledge Seekers" ladies' literary club, a schoolhouse, train depot, cheese factory, cider mill, Farmers' State Bank, a hardware and tin shop, Red Cross Society, and a few establishments specializing in farming equipment and mechanical goods.

Today, the town is but a shadow of its former glory, yet it exudes a palpable historic charm. The old school and a handful of downtown storefronts, along with numerous aged homes, still stand as testament to its storied past. Onondaga is presently the city of license for WILX-TV, with its transmitter located to the west of town. It is also home to the renowned Onondaga Dragway, situated three-and-a-half miles to the east on Bellevue Road.

For a glimpse into the lives of Onondaga's early settlers and residents, a visit to the cemetery, located just half a mile east of town on Oak (Rossman) Road, offers a rich historical experience.
