ABOUT GRAND LEDGE

Native American Settlement

The indigenous people residing near the Grand River by the cliffs were descendants of the Pottawatomi, Chippewa, and Ottawa tribes. They harvested clams from the river, extracted coal from its banks, and engaged in hunting deer, turkey, fox, and bear, as well as fishing for black bass. In their language, they referred to the cliffs as "Big Rocks" when translated into English.

According to historical records, Hugh Heward was the first Caucasian to explore this area by water and document his discoveries in the early days. In his journal, he describes the sandstone ledges with high banks, interspersed with pine trees and dense woods, offering ideal spots for making syrup, as well as the presence of several small islands. Henry Trench settled in this location in 1847, which eventually developed into downtown Grand Ledge. After a few years, he returned to the east. In 1850, the settlers officially named their village Grand Ledge and established a post office. By 1869, a railroad had reached the north end of the village. Then, in 1871, the village was incorporated by the state of Michigan.
