ABOUT CHARLOTTE

In 1832, the land that would later become Charlotte was purchased by George Barnes from the U.S. Government. Three years later in 1835, Barnes sold the land to Edmond B. Bostwick, a New York City land speculator. Subsequently, Bostwick sold portions of the land to H.I. Lawrence, Townsend Harris, and Francis Cochran, who together established the village and named it after Bostwick's wife, Charlotte. On March 17, 1838, Jonathan Searles became the first postmaster of the village.

Charlotte was officially incorporated as a village on October 10, 1863, and as a city on March 29, 1871. Over time, the area was also known by the unofficial names of Eaton Centre and Carmel. When Eaton County was organized in 1837, Charlotte was designated as the county seat; however, due to a lack of population and buildings, county functions were carried out in Bellevue until 1840.
