ABOUT DEWITT

DeWitt derived its name from DeWitt Clinton, the Governor of New York from 1817 to 1822 and again from 1825 until his passing in 1828. Captain David Scott, who relocated from Ann Arbor in 1833, was the initial settler who plotted the area. DeWitt Township was officially established by the State Legislature on March 23, 1836. The inaugural township assembly took place at Captain Scott's residence on April 8, 1836, during which Welcome J. Partelo was appointed as the township's first Supervisor.

It didn't take much time for the State to partition DeWitt Township into the various townships we know today. In 1837, the township was divided in two by a north-south line, with the western section becoming Watertown Township. Just two years later, another split occurred, this time with an east-west line, resulting in the creation of Bingham Township in the northern half. Shortly after, the Governor signed a bill to further divide the remaining area by a north-south line, giving rise to Ossowa Township (later renamed Bath Township in 1843) in the eastern half. The last division of the township occurred in 1841, forming Olive Township in the northern part of the remaining land. In a span of four years, DeWitt Township transitioned from covering the entire County to its present boundaries.
